Hiatus observations

  • When I’m riding I miss CrossFit (ok, high intensity mixed-modal training).
  • When I’m CrossFitting, I miss riding.
  • When I’m not training at all, I miss riding.

Interesting, non?

On top of this, I spent the night painting big, white walls and listening to a Robb Wolf talk about the fantastic application of generalist fitness to the general population and ‘GPP specialists’ (combat / rescue professionals etc). Specifically he lamented the tendency of the generalist obsession to prevent people athletes from feeling free about running (toward specialisation) with their passions and gifts.

Generalised specialisation, whether through phases of block periodisation or seasonal training or complimentary strength and conditioning (hmmm?) is a pretty rad thing. I don’t know any pure CrossFitters, let alone anyone who’s really gone after the strength-power-SE-GPP  periodised version that seems to set people up to be monsters, but if I think of people who are fast on bikes and people who are GPP strong, they’re Jeff, John, Jase, Jim and, more recently Neil.

Hmmm…

What does this mean coming out of a couple of months of inactivity and into an off-season with nothing but the intention to build some strength? Practically speaking, not a lot. Or everything.
