New eyes

After years of thinking about it, I finally went under the “knife” (thermal laser) and got my eye sight corrected. This is pretty much the exact procedure (intralase lasik). Probably best not to watch if you’re squeamish.

Although completely painless, I have to say the procedure was pretty uncomfortable and confronting for a good minute or so. Everything was over and done with in 2-3 minutes, but during that time I had my eyelids held open with a speculum, and some kind of suction instrument attached to my eyeball with a fair amount of downward pressure. The pressure causes everything to go pretty diffuse and blurry and blacks out your peripheral vision so that it’s like staring down a long, blurry, uncomfortable tunnel. It’s about as close to claustrophobia as I’ve ever been, made worse by the fact that you know what they’re up to (cutting around your cornea).

Almost a week later, everything is pretty comfortable. I’m slightly over corrected, so reading takes a bit more effort than usual but I’m told that should self-correct over the next couple of months. The accuracy of my vision varies throughout the day as the muscles that focus my vision adapt to a different shape of lens, and I apparently have some tear film that’s crept in beneath the corneal flap they made during the operation. That too will be reabsorbed over time.

So my vision isn’t as quite good as what it was with glasses or contacts, but it’s far, far more useful. Little things – like being able to see right up until I close my eyes at night and first thing in the morning, being able to rest with my eyes closed without getting ‘gummy’ contacts, the feeling of ‘nude’ eyes, and being able to go to bed without doing the contact lens routine – are amazingly significant.
