I’ve been stoked on thoughts of riding mtb again since watching Paul VDP take the XCE World Cup trophy.

It’s not just that event. It’s the warmer weather, the lengthening days, Dave’s 29er in the carpark and, most recently, a run in Benalla on dirt that smelled like the dirt on rides of old.

Then I spent a day down at Baum and got very tempted by the idea of a 650b bike … or a 29er.
Somebody stop me!

After this pit-stop I forgot to restart the Garmin and then rode for another hour. Figures below are guestimates.

2:15-ish, 40km-ish, 1,000m-ish

Not a long time, but a good time zipping around the refreshed You Yangs. Neil unpacked a bike whose brakes were in dire need of bleeding, so we climbed out of the stockyards and over to the … (think, damnit) flat bit. Without brakes Neil couldn’t descent too well, so to make it fair and fun I tried to ride the same – recalling Jeff yelling ‘no brakes’ from behind me at the approach to every corner. Good practice.

The trails are in fantastic condition. Berms are pitch perfect and as solid as pavement. Everything is fast and furious and although we were only out for an hour and a half I felt it throughout the whole body. Mountain biking is hard. The week’s 12 hour is going to be … interesting.

A quick couple of hours on the back loops of the Youyangs with J.P. and his crew.

I swapped my Cubano for his Yeti ARC, which was fun but left me with no regrets as to the titanium sled, even with similar positions the handling was bizarrely different.

Race: National Series XCC Round 1
Sport class: 15 minutes + 3 laps

With no goals other than to hurt like a bastard and not not get pulled I guess I can be 50% happy.

11:30 into the race (lap 10) with the lead bunch about to gobble me up, I got pulled. Big gobs of great, lung-sucking, painful FUn.

Came home and ordered Friel’s Bible and Charmichael’s companion-for-the-real-world (dorky cover aside) to scratch an itch that has been getting progressively worse: the desire to understand bike programming. Step #1 as a guy who puts in a broken 40 minutes a week on the bike right now is to actually spend some time on a fucking bike, but being so vulnerable to program doubts I’m hoping that understanding what I’m doing will help with two complimentary facets – getting the most out of whatever time I can log, and being confident enough that it’s going to work that I’ll actually get out there.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention: Neil won and picked up a cool hundred, a pretty sweet medal, an official series jersey and an ‘Series Leader’ race plate that comes with a certain weight of obligation to show up in Tassie and defend.

4.62 km
24.1 km/h avg.
42.8 km/h max.

34km and 580m of climbing, (via Neil’s blog), but the most important things are best described with pictures anyway.

This goes up:

This goes down:

Moody and Neil’s mate Andrew Downie joined us for a 2.5 hour joyride from the bottom of the Stockyards, up over the ever-awesome link track to swoop and giggle our way speeder-bike style through the pencily gums. We took a small break to fool around on a newly discovered pump track, teased the roadies among us about their cautious attitude toward puddles and generally had a rockin’ good time.

Oh, did I mention that Ryan had done a 1.5 hour trail run before meeting us and still spanked me good, with 26 less gears? Good.

Up early and out to the Youyangs with one simple goal in mind: climb at least one third of the vertical gain I’ll encounter at the Odyssey — 1,000m.

The numbers are here, but the summary info is basically this:
About 33% of the climbing, over about 40% of the distance, in about 40% of the target time. A little hurty but not smashing, which is a good sign, but it’s not just a matter of doing the same thing three times (with a little more climbing). Tripling the numbers requires more than triple the effort. So here’s an example, just a little sample of how the Odyssey could just kill a man.

Time: 02:26:59
Distance: 37.26 km
Elevation Gain: 1,072 m
