Good fun with H, Arthur and Wilko in the Hotel gym at the W in Hong Kong. This has been a phenomenal conference with an amazing team. I’m pretty damng proud to work with these guys.

In the morning:
30 push-ups

In the afternoon:
7 Box Jumps
8 Push Press @ 30kg
9 K2E
AMRAP 10 min = 3 and 4 K2E

Rest 4 min, then…

AMRAP 10 min = 3 and 8 thrusters

Rest 4 min then…

8 Pull-ups
9 Power Cleans @ 30kg
10 Burpees
AMRAP 10 min = 3 and 4 pull-ups

Notes:
Goddamn 30kg felt heavy.

Neil came over to help me glue tyres and do some conditioning work.

Build to a heavy single deadlift:
3×5 @ 70kg
3×3 @ 90kg (nutters stayed on fives)
3×1 @ 100kg (nutters may have done triples)

Then:
P1 25 box jumps @ 24″ box
P2 Plank
x4 rounds (rotating movements)

P1 25 Cleans @ 16kg KB
P2 25 Jerks @ 16kg KB
x4 rounds (rotating movements)

Then:
Roast lamb and red wine.

I remember shortly after Claire was born doing Diane (21-15-9 deadlift / HSPU) with 90kg on the bar. No way in hell I’d be doing that now.

No training at all over the past week. Work has been very, very hard. Fee has been sick and sleep hasn’t been the best. I’m just happy to have made it out the other side with my head above water and not getting sick myself.

The week ahead will be a fall back to Week 4 of the TCTP program. It’ll also include a flight to Sydney for a meeting with a strategic partner I’ve never met before to discuss an unknown topic, an evening talk to design students on the merits of Agile, and a presentation at the Agile Australia conference which I have yet to properly rehearse.

40 Double-unders
30 Box jumps @ 20″ bench
20 Swings @ 24kg KB
x 5 rounds

= 18:03 (2:51 + 3:22 + 3:33 + 4:17 + 4:00)

Notes
Lost a lot of time detangling the shitty Nike rope they have up in the work gym. Swings got hard in the final couple of rounds — just working under the load, with heavy breathing, trying to keep the spine stable. The 24 bell just felt heavy. Otherwise just a march through.

Doug and I cut down the hero workout “Small” to a sprint distance. The prescribed volume was 1000m row, 50 reps on the bodyweight movements and 800m on the run.

9:00 PM

A lazy hour and ten below AT on the PorchTrainer2000™.

One of the two that make me really nervous before-hand, FGB and Fran both have me drawing out the warm-up in some kind of futile struggle against the inevitable. When I got pulled from the XCC race I hopped the bunting tape, unclipped, put my head on my stem and gasped for air for probably a solid three minutes. Gasped. Each lap was will against legs that didn’t hurt so much as constantly bitch that more acceleration was simply not possible.

The signal I took from it isn’t a new one: What you thought was intense in training is a fucking walk in the park compared to racing.

Hence, something a little uncomfortable…

Workout

Fight Gone Bad
1:00 20 kg Thruster (sub for wall ball)
1:00 35 kg SDHP
1:00 20″ Box jump
1:00 35 kg Push-press
1:00 Row (for calories)
1:00 Rest
x 3 rounds

Total: 253 (PR = 311)

Notes

Waaaay down on PR, partially attributable to not coming out of the gate hard when stamina is high, partially just decreased work capacity. Realistically 35kg is too heavy for me on the SDHP and push-press. Power (not strength) endurance should be the limiting factor in FGB. For the first time, I’m not going to vow that I need to be stronger. This is what it is, next time I’ll drop the weight. I’m beginning to feel like this isn’t leading anywhere specific, which is fine – I appreciate the myriad of benefits that come with GPP, but I have some specific things I’d like to give some love to for a while.

Thursday, Friday & Saturday

Work has been crazy, intense and exciting the past week. And exhausting. No training since Wednesday (glad I got that trainer workout in), in spite of a vow to hit the long hill repeats. Yesterday I took Claire to swimming, got a hair cut and my eyes checked and made dinner for Mick and Jo. Chillaxin’ to the maximum, and I needed it.

Back in action today after a good night’s sleep and some big hip articulators ready for punishment.

Workout

2 x 20 Deck Squats
20 Box Jumps @ 24″ box
3 x 2:00  e.s. Box Hops @ 24″ box
3 x 20 e.s. Step-up, lunge @ 25kg /24″
3 x 20 e.s. Bulgarian Split Squat @ 25 kg (racked: back, front, back)
6:00 KB C&J (long cycle), alt. hands every 5 @ 24kg KB

Notes

Back at home which means a return to the big box. The extra few inches puts the hip below parallel and makes things significantly harder. I got a little bit too interested in upping the pace during the second set of box hops and gave my right leg a good scrape. 25 kg on the shoulders made stepping up to the big box a fair progression. The step-up lunges seemed to take forever, but I kept Neil’s advice in mind and tried to crank out the B.S.S.es as fast as possible.

After last time I expected the KB finisher to be a killer, but I paced myself well and was able to keep good form. My cleans were smooth and, best of all, I’ve somehow managed to get the switch-grip off the rack down pat. Twist from overhead to return to rack, shrug the weight out of the rack and catch it in the fingers (no torn callouses), clean and catch the handle across the palm ready for the jerk. Nice!

Best advice of the weekend:

Let go of ambition.
